On April 25th, BYD officially unveiled the OCEAN-M concept car at the 2024 Beijing Auto Show. The model is positioned as a four-door hatchback electric subcompact sports car. This concept car will be included under the Ocean Network brand, with its production version priced between 150,000 and 200,000 yuan, and it will be launched in the third quarter of this year.
The OCEAN-M continues the streamlined exterior design emphasized by the Ocean Network, with a “shark mouth” feel at the front of the car, giving it a rather aggressive appearance. At the same time, its front headlights are designed with considerable simplicity and sharpness, and the light clusters also feature wave-shaped LED daytime running lights and dot matrix details.
The car also features a large side intake design at the front bumper position, along with a front spoiler kit, further enhancing the sporty feel of the entire front end.
Actually, the front design of BYD Seal EV is already quite excellent. It’s not difficult to see that the overall shape of OCEAN-M has the influence of Seal. By readjusting this design and adding a high-performance exterior trim kit, the high-performance style of the entire car immediately comes to the fore.
The side design of the new car is quite simple and concise. The two-tone body can effectively lower the visual center of gravity of the car, making it appear more low-slung. Although the body of the OCEAN-M lacks excessive decorative designs, its sharp waistline, flared rear fender, and oversized side skirt give the car a strong muscular feel.
In addition, the OCEAN-M is equipped with hidden door handles to further reduce the vehicle’s wind resistance coefficient.
As for the rear of the car, the most eye-catching elements are undoubtedly the fixed spoiler on the roof and the large air diffuser at the rear bumper position. BYD really understands that a high-performance subcompact sports car should be designed in such a way. Additionally, the OCEAN-M is equipped with a through-type tail light design, with a dot matrix pattern inside the light cluster that echoes the design of the front headlights.
In terms of power, it is expected that the OCEAN-M will be built on a new pure electric platform, adopting a rear-wheel drive/four-wheel drive layout, along with the latest generation of CTB battery-to-body integration technology, a new generation of multi-in-one intelligent electric drive system, and iTAC intelligent torque control technology. We will continue to monitor and provide updates on other relevant information regarding this new model.
The design of the OCEAN-M is truly stunning and impressive. The BYD design team has become increasingly proficient in shaping the exterior of their models. It is evident that the OCEAN-M is already highly completed and basically close to the state of a production car. If BYD can retain the large aerodynamic body kit and spoiler package from this concept car on the production version, it is believed that it will attract the attention of many performance enthusiasts.
Moreover, the OCEAN-M will also feature a series of advanced electric technologies. How much these technologies will enhance its performance remains to be seen, but we can certainly look forward to it with excitement.
